Great Plains: the ultimate Kenyan safari

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, cultural insight, or thrilling wildlife encounters, Great Plains offers the perfect blend of luxury camps and experiences. Founded and designed by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, these camps uphold the highest standards of hospitality while embracing National Geographic-inspired practices, ensuring a safari beyond the ordinary.

Travel designer Sarah has recently returned from a fabulous Kenyan adventure, where she visited two Great Plains properties including Mara Toto Tree Camp and Mara Expedition Camp.

Mara Toto Tree Camp

Mara Toto Tree Camp

Set in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Mara Toto Tree Camp offers stunning views of the reserve and Ntiakitiak River, perfect for witnessing the southern and green season migrations. This Relais & Chateaux safari camp combines luxury with adventure, featuring elevated suites with canvas and wood design. Each spacious suite includes a luxurious bath, indoor shower, writing desk, and lounge, creating an ideal retreat for extended stays.

Tell us about your Mara Toto Tree Camp highlights, Sarah!

We were absolutely loving one of the safari drives. It was around the time we’d usually begin heading back for sundowners, but we were watching a massive pride of lions, with a huge male. We were the only people there and were so engrossed with these magnificent creatures that our safari guide set up sundowners in our vehicle. We sat and enjoyed the world’s best G&T with the ‘lion king’ only 2m away from us. It was phenomenal.

After a fantastic day of game drives, I returned to my room to find a luxurious bubble bath, complete with French champagne and homemade chocolates had been set up for me to enjoy, relax and unwind before dinner. I then re-joined my travel companions for dinner, where we enjoyed an interactive dinner. We were in an open-style kitchen, where we watched the chef cook, the staff sang for us, and we all relaxed and fully embraced the moment for the night. It was fabulous, and the food was absolutely divine.

Mara Toto Tree Camp provides Canon cameras for guests to borrow during their stay to capture their visit and all the wonderful creatures you see on safari. At the end of your visit, they provide you with your images to enjoy and look back on your time.

Mara Expedition Camp

Mara Expedition Camp, a Great Plains Conservation Explorer-Collection camp, offers an affordable yet stylish safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Set in the Mara North Conservancy, it provides access to vast wildlife areas and two migrations. Inspired by early explorers, the camp features five spacious canvas tents and one 2-bedroom family tent. Enjoy the Mara’s wildlife from the pool or fire-lit outdoor area, with a more private safari experience in the conservancy.

And what about your Mara Expedition Camp highlights, Sarah?

A standout difference at Mara Expedition compared to other Mara camps was Great Plains’ access to drive within the private Mara North conservancy. Conservancies limit the number of visitors to an area, ensuring a more intimate and peaceful safari. With only a few accommodations in the area, we found ourselves the only jeep in the area, offering an unparalleled sense of solitude and immersion in nature. Unlike crowded game drives, where you might be stuck in a traffic jam of jeeps, the conservancy’s limited visitor access provides a truly private and unspoiled safari experience. It was extremely intimate and authentic.

What I loved most was the warmth, refinement and sense of peace felt while here. Having now returned home to Melbourne, this is what has stayed with me, and what I now cherish as a special memory.
