Segera Retreat – Sarah's Review
Segera lies in the high grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau, its six timber and thatch villas raised above a profusion of botanical life to offer views towards Mount Kenya. Each large, en-suite bedroom has a private deck with sun loungers, swing bed and sunken Jacuzzi sunk into the deck outside the bedroom. It was here that Forth & Wonder Travel Designer, Sarah experienced an extraordinary level of care, remarkable attention to detail, and an unparalleled luxury stay that went above and beyond her expectations on her recent trip.
"Staff were exceptional - so warm and friendly"
Sarah noted the personal touch each team member brought to the experience, particularly their Maasai guide, Manu. His passion for his work was contagious, and he quickly became a beloved figure among the guests. The staff at Segera have worked there for many years, which is a clear reflection of the positive environment and strong team dynamic. Every detail of the guest experience was meticulously crafted, with the team consistently going above and beyond to ensure an unforgettable stay. Sarah was especially touched by thoughtful gestures like surprise bubble baths, personalised chalkboard messages left at her door each day, hot water bottles tucked into her bed at night, and carefully selected wines presented each evening to complement dinner.
"Lions roared all night"
Game viewing at Segera is fantastic, with some of the most special sightings from this trip including a pride of 11 lions and rare Grévy’s zebras, which can only be found in the North of Kenya. Being on its own concession allows for an added level of adventure, with the freedom to go off-road and enjoy night drives, offering an even more immersive safari experience. The safari vehicles are fabulous—modern, with unobstructed views, and charging points to ensure your devices stay fully charged for capturing those unforgettable moments.
The owner of Segera founded the Zeitz foundation, which is currently working to create the Segera Rhino Sanctuary. It’s set to become a key part of the Kenya Rhino Range Expansion Plan, creating a vast interconnected network of private conservancies, community lands, government parks, and reclaimed areas. This initiative aims to establish one of the largest rhino sanctuaries in the world, providing a safe haven for rhinos to return to Central Kenya‘s expansive savannahs.
"The food was incredible"
At Segera, the culinary experience is a true highlight, with chefs crafting international dishes that are uniquely enhanced by local Kenyan ingredients. Sarah described the food as nothing short of incredible, from homemade peanut butter and jams to freshly made granola. One memorable evening, they dined in the open kitchen, where Sarah and her travel companions enjoyed delicious food and wine while chatting with the friendly staff, followed by singing and dancing. Their guide, Manu, joined them for dinner, adding to the warmth and fun of the experience, and making the evening even more special.
A uniquely immersive experience
