Africa is a wildly vast and varied continent where the possibilities are truly endless! Where to holiday in Africa January

Start your New Year with an inspirational adventure to Africa, one of the world’s last untamed continents. January is not peak season in Africa but that shouldn’t stop you, it’s one of the best months to catch calving season in Tanzania’s Southern Serengeti and enjoy the warm and dry weather on a beach break in eclectic Zanzibar. Since it is traditionally off-season, you may also benefit from lower pricing when traveling in January. After an indulgent holiday season, wellness may be on your agenda. If you are looking to avoid the school holiday periods, February is a fantastic time to travel to Africa for both safari and beach holidays. Summer is in full swing and South Africa’s Cape Town is buzzing with live music and outdoor dining experiences to rival any Australian capital. Within a short drive, you can be sipping some of the finest wines in the South African Winelands or simply relax on one of the beautiful beaches. There are also plenty of wildlife encounters at their prime during February including your chance to see the mesmerising mountain Gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. For the extra adventurous, it’s whale shark season in Zanzibar and Kenya so get your dive gear out to see these gentle giants as they begin their migration.

It’s the tail end of the wet season so if you are after a safari experience, this is a great month to go. You can benefit from fewer tour groups and lower costs. You might just need to pack a rain jacket for a typical afternoon downpour – they will be over before you know it and in fact, those skies create some of the most memorable sunsets imaginable. The land is lush and you will see plenty of colorful birds out to play. In South Africa, The Cape Town International Jazz Festival gets underway – Africa’s grandest gathering! If Victoria Falls is on your bucket list, March is a great time to see it at its fullest from both Zimbabwe and Zambia. However, if you want to take photos from afar, a visit from June to September when the spray will be lighter so won’t block the views. Combine a visit here with a trip to one of Zimbabwe’s best national parks, Hwange boasts some of the best game viewings on safari in Southern Africa.

 

Where to holiday in Africa in April

Summer starts to wind down in Africa and the first showers of Autumn start to sprinkle their way through the continent. East Africa and its tropical coast see some wet and thundery weather but inland you will see lush green landscapes and many wobbly newborns roaming the plains of Serengeti & Ngorongoro. It is a wonderful month to visit Namibia as the rains have settled meaningless dust in the air to observe the hypnotic red dunes and watch elephants and giraffes making their way through Etosha National Park.

One of Africa’s best and most luxurious destinations, Botswana’s Kalahari Desert is beautiful in May with warm sunny days and mild nights. The lush and wet summer is over and wildlife start to prepare for the dry winter ahead by moving to seek water. Most of Southern Africa experiences milder temperatures, lower humidity and less rainfall so it a great time to travel with the whole family. Madagascar has plenty of animal activity during May too.

It’s dry season now (April to October) meaning game viewing is at its best as animals congregate towards watering holes and rivers such as Chobe River Botswana, a particularly great time to see majestic elephants. Humpback whale migration in Mozambique or Madagascar. Peak season starts for safari’s in Tanzania’s popular parks alongside Botswana’s Okavango Delta so while you will get great game viewing, you will have more tourist to share the sights with.

Where to holiday in Africa in July

It’s peak safari season in parks across Eastern & Southern Africa. The Wildebeest migrations begin in the Masai Mara Kenya and run through until September, a breathtaking sight that will stay with you forever. Whale season begins in South Africa and you can head to arguably the best whale watching destinations in the world, Hermanus to sight whales through to October [Festival Sept/Oct so may move]. Zambia’s Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park are inaccessible most of the year, but July brings about good weather allowing you to fully explore this spectacular area and enjoy prime conditions for walking safaris in South Luangwa. Ideal conditions for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda.

 

Where to holiday in Africa in August

Peak season continues for wildlife lovers visiting the regions of Zambia and Tanzania. Wildebeest migrations continue in Kenya, the whale migration continues in Mozambique and Madagascar, gorillas are still easily accessible in Uganda & Rwanda and Botswana’s Okavango Delta is at its best. It is peak season for a reason! The weather is warm and perfect to explore some coastal beach destinations in Kenya and nearby Zanzibar.

Where to holiday in Africa in September

Some wildlife phenomenon’s end while others are just beginning during September. Madagascar boasts many bird species, and the cheeky and famous lemurs breeding season begins. Keen divers will find whale sharks and Manta ray’s heading to the warm waters of Mozambique and can be seen here through to November.

 

Where to holiday in Africa in October

Tanzania some of the best diving in the country offshore. Zambia safari season is still strong as the last month of the dry season brings superb game viewing as they congregate around watering holes, expect hotter temperate when traveling. The Mfuwe sector of South Luangwa Zambia has sandy soil and all-weather roads, making it accessible year-round, great for walking safaris.

Zimbabwe’s largest game park Hwange is a hot spot for a safari holiday this time of year. In Botswana, The Savuti and Makgadikgadi Pans are home to the countries famous zebra migration, one of nature’s finest spectacles. For the bird enthusiast, a perfect opportunity for bird-watching.
