Did you know a group of rhinoceros is called a crash? These giants of the savannah are one of the most fascinating creatures you’ll encounter on safari. Here are five more things you need to know about the Remarkable Rhino.
1.
There are five species of rhinoceros found around the world. Black and white rhinos live in Africa while Indian, Javan and Sumatran rhinos live in Asia. White rhinos are the second largest land mammal on earth, with the males weighing up to 2,300 kilos and standing four metres tall at the head.

2.
Despite the names, black and white rhinos aren’t actually different colours (both are a uniform dark mottled grey). The name ‘white’ comes from the Dutch word ‘widje’ or Afrikaans word ‘weit’, meaning wide and referring to the animal’s wide mouth. In contrast, black rhinos have a narrower hooked upper lip.
3.
Just 150 years ago, more than one million rhinos roamed the savannahs of Africa. Today, around 25,000 remain. Sadly, rhinos of all species have been the target of hunters and poachers for many years. They are valued for their horn, which is – incorrectly – believed to be beneficial in traditional Chinese medicine or to be an aphrodisiac. In fact, the horn is made of keratin and is similar to horses hooves, turtle beaks and cockatoo bills.

4.
Even in the face of these dangers, there is hope. Anti-poaching rangers and specially trained dog squads now patrol many areas across Africa to protect these magnificent creatures. While some subspecies of rhinos have become extinct, African southern white rhinos are one of the world’s great conservation success stories. They are the only species of rhino not to be endangered and thrive in protected reserves.

5.
The majority of the African rhino population lives in just four countries – South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya – and are a common sight on safari. Looking for a truly one-of-a-kind rhino encounter? A unique subspecies of black rhino can be found only in the Kunene region of Namibia. They have adapted to desert living and are able to cover huge distances, climb mountains, and go days without drinking water.
