The favoured hotel of the Clintons and Obamas when they’re in town, Cape Town’s Cape Grace Hotel ticks all the boxes.
The Cape Grace Hotel opened its doors just over 20 years ago, but the style and ambience hark back to an earlier time. The design is inspired by Cape Town’s rich naval and maritime history, with elements of the colonial era in antique furniture, blue and white Dutch pottery and rich fabrics.

Each of the 120 rooms and suites are unique, with their own ‘story’ that unfolds through design. French doors open out onto views of the breathtaking Table Mountain or the bustling harbour below. If you’re in town for a while, choose one of the slick two-bedroom suites that’s like your home-away-from-home in Cape Town with a full kitchen, separate dining area and a sunny lounge.

Signal restaurant serves up contemporary Cape cuisine complemented by an excellent wine list of mostly South African vintages. The lively Bascule Bar is the place for sundowners or an after dinner whisky and a traditional afternoon tea is served daily in the library. Soak up some of that glorious South African sun on the stylish pool deck that feels like you’re on a luxury yacht. The plush spa offers African-inspired treatments, like Kalahari Desert salt body scrubs and honeybush facials.

Cape Town addresses don’t come much better than this. Cape Grace Hotel is part of the desirable V&A Waterfront, but occupies a private quay separated by a bridge from the more heavily touristed areas. It manages to be both central and exclusive, the ideal combination for a luxury traveller.
