Tanzania on top – the best luxury safaris in East Africa

From a sleek contemporary escape hidden in the hills above the Ngorongoro Crater to a restored farmhouse dating back to the 1920s and an opulent tented camp set in the middle of a wild savannah, Tanzania offers a luxury safari experience to suit every traveller. Discover rare tree-climbing lions, endangered wild dogs and millions of wildebeest right at your doorstep.

Serengeti Mara – Lamai Serengeti

The plains of the Serengeti cover some 30,000 square kilometres, encompassing one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. It’s a hugely popular safari destination, but head north to the Serengeti Mara on the border with Kenya, and the other tourists begin to disappear. The north is an area of lush, rolling grasslands, in sharp contrast to the dry plains of the south, and attracts game all year round.

It’s also an integral part of the greatest natural show on earth – the wildebeest migration. Guests at Lamai Serengeti will have a front row seat. The property is just a short distance from the Mara River where thousands of animals will make their treacherous crossing. 12 rooms are split across the Main Lodge and a smaller Private Lodge, and each room has been thoughtfully designed to make the most of the views, natural light and complete privacy.

Grumeti Reserves – Singita Sabora Tented Camp

This private reserve to the north of the Serengeti is open to only a handful of guests staying at the three luxury properties within its borders. Grumeti forms part of the western corridor for the great migration and more than a million animals will thunder through the park between May and July. The reserve is one of Africa’s great conservation success stories and its resident population of wildlife thrives in the winding river valleys, rolling plains and woodland forest.

Step onto the grounds at Singita Sabora Tented Camp and back into an African safari of the 1920s. The nine lavish tents are furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques, Persian rugs, original campaign furniture and sparkling crystal, offset with traditional Masaai rugs and beadwork. Daybeds are scattered in shady spots across the plains, and curious zebra and grazing buffalo will come incredibly close.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the jewel box of Tanzania Safari. One of the world’s great natural wonders, it is the remains of a collapsed volcano enclosed within walls up to 600 meters high. The floor of the crater is lush and green, attracting herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and gazelle – as well as the stealthy predators who follow them. It is also arguably the best place in Africa to see solitary bull elephants, the hulking elder statesmen of the savannah.

Asilia: The Highlands

Tucked away on the secluded Olmoti Volcano to the north of the Ngorongoro Crater, The Highlands is a luxury safari experience like no other. Its contemporary, high-tech design puts a new spin on the traditional tented camp, with eight sleek canvas and Perspex-domed pods. The triangulated floor to ceiling windows offer spectacular views over the mountain forest and there are cosy wood burning stoves for cold winter nights. The camp’s remote location, away from other properties in the crater, makes for an exclusive, secluded escape.

Gibb’s Farm

Gibb’s Farm started life as just that, a working coffee plantation in the late 1920s. The farmhouse has been beautifully restored and a stay here blends the legacy of colonial settlers with the luxury of a modern safari experience. It’s surrounded by 17 themed guest cottages that are decorated with artwork from the property’s artist in residence program. It’s truly a one of a kind home to return to after a day on safari.

Lake Manyara – Chem Chem Lodge

Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania’s smaller parks, though that doesn’t mean it should be left off an African safari itinerary. During the wet season, which peaks around April and May, the shallow water of the lake blooms pink with the feathers of millions of flamingoes. And while you’ll find all the usual suspects here, including a large population of baboons, for the most impressive sight you’ll need to look up. The park is famous for its tree climbing lions and it’s not unusual to see a pride relaxing in the branches of an acacia.

The phrase ‘chem chem’ means spring in Swahili and Chem Chem Lodge encapsulates that same gentle spirit. Things move slowly here and there’s a real focus on peace, stillness and relaxation. Squashy couches and oversized armchairs are dotted around at thoughtful intervals so guests can stop, sit and admire the view when the mood strikes them. Eight tent-style suites surround the main lodge that’s designed to reflect the form of one of the flamingoes that flock to the nearby lake.

Selous Reserve – Sand Rivers

Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve, but you’ve probably never heard its name. It’s one of the most beautiful regions in the country, covering more than 50,000 kilometers of rolling plains, rivers and lakes. It would be impossible to count the wildlife within Selous with more elephant, lion and buffalo found here year-round than anywhere else on the continent. But what makes Selous really special is its African wild dogs – the park is home to around half of the remaining population of this endangered carnivore.

You’ll be amazed by the lack of walls at Sand River. Every room is open-fronted and looking over the river, giving an expansive sense of space and fluidity. If you want to get even closer to nature for bare bones (but still luxurious) African safari experience, the lodge also offers flycamping. They don’t like to give too much away, but suffice it to say it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
