Of the remaining population 10 groups of gorillas live in Rwanda with up to 40 members in each group. It’s here that you can see arguably the most famous gorillas in the world, the Susa group studied by Dian Fossey. You will trek through dense steamy jungles with a professional local guide who offers you a balance of independence and support on your journey. To find this group, you’ll embark on one of the toughest treks in the park, but it’s unquestionably worth it for a moment with these beautiful creatures.

Gorillas are spread across the biologically diverse extinct volcano range of the Virunga Mountains and the steep terrain of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. June to September and December to February are the most popular times to visit Uganda to enjoy the experience with less rain and more sunshine, however you can embark on a gorilla trekking safari at any time of the year. There are some incredible luxury lodges and camps close to the park, making for an unbeatable combination of wildlife and five-star comfort.
Trekking groups are smaller than in neighbouring countries at about 4 guests plus rangers meaning you will often come much closer to the gorillas. Here you will hike along forested slopes of dormant volcanoes and navigate dense bush, thorny plants and diverse greenery. If you have any physical limitations, the Virunga Mountain treks in Rwanda may be better suited. While Rwanda has been wracked by political conflict for more than two decades, gorilla trekking is an important part of its recovery and you will be welcomed by smiling local guides happy to share this experience with you.
